Evidence for the beginnings of the long history of Wicca can first be seen in the cave paintings of the Pyrenees areas of France and Spain dating from around 17,000 years ago. Concerned with success in hunting these paintings are usually very far underground and are clearly intended to invoke the aid of the goddess of mother Earth.A great change in the history of Wicca came with the spread of farming in Europe around 10,000 years ago. The people relationship with the land changed and their need for a wider range of deities to help and protect them expanded. Evidence of elemental Gods now become more common with Gods and Goddesses of wind, rain, thunder, and fertility being added to the old Sun God and moon Goddess and the history of Wicca starts to become more familiar to us. The older gods of the hunt retreated back into the woods and forests and became gods of nature, and the "wild wood" usually represented by the horned figure of Herne the Hunter or the leafy Green Man.In this comprehensive guide, you'll find:History of WiccaPrinciples of Wicca Benefits of witchcraft Myths about witches elements and personalitiesTypes of candles Candle colors and their meanings Preparation for candle magic Anointing your candles Setting up of a simple pagan or Wiccan altar How to perform a Wiccan ritual How to cast a Wiccan circleWicca candle spellsA spell to heal a marriage or relationshipMoonlight love attraction spellA spell to make your dream job yoursBanishing depressionSpell for courageMisconceptions About WiccansWiccans worship the devilWiccans sacrifice animalsWiccans have a "dark Bible"There is no bible that Wiccans follow. A215 road

The A215 is an A road in South London, from Elephant and Castle to Shirley. It runs through the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Croydon. Beginning as Walworth Road, the A215 becomes Camberwell Road much of which is a conservation area after entering the former Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell. Crossing the A202, the A215 becomes Denmark Hill, originally known as Dulwich Hill, but renamed in 1683 to commemorate the marriage of Princess Anne (later Queen Anne) to Prince George of Denmark. After passing Herne Hill railway station the road becomes Norwood Road, Knights Hill, and then Beulah Hill at its crossroads with the A214. Beulah Hill was the site of Britain's first independent television transmitter, built by the Independent Television Authority in 1955. Descending towards South Norwood the A215 becomes South Norwood Hill and then Portland Road, just after crossing the A213. A short section starting at the junction with Woodside Green is known as Spring Lane, leading to Shirley Road, the final section into Shirley, Croydon.

Dr Shuker's Casebook

Although he is best-known for his extensive cryptozoological researches and publications, Dr Karl Shuker has also investigated a very diverse range of other anomalies and unexplained phenomena, both in the literature and in the field. Travelling the world in search of mysteries and marvels of every kind, Dr Shuker has climbed the volcanic slopes of Easter Island on the trail of moai and manbirds, he has traversed the Theban necropolis of Egypt's West Bank in search of a singing Colossus and the head of Ozymandias, he has journeyed to Woolpit in the footsteps of its mystifying Green Children, and to Niagara on the lookout for its long-lost winged cat. Whether it be flying over the Bermuda Triangle (four times!), inspecting cropfield circles in Buckinghamshire, questing for mermaids and unicorns, gazing in awe at a putative living dinosaur emblazoned upon the magnificent Ishtar Gate of Babylon's King Nebuchadnezzar, revealing a bizarre yet hitherto-undocumented bat-winged monster encountered in the heartland of Kent, uncovering an anachronistic Cambodian stegosaur at Angkor Wat, peering in hope across the dark waters of Loch Ness and the monster-haunted lakes of Iceland, seeking resurrected avifauna in New Zealand, finding solace in the stark majesty of Stonehenge and the holy grandeur of Lourdes, charting the preternatural entities of Senegambia's forests or Australia's Dreamtime, tracking elusive black panthers on Exmoor, or unmasking serpent-necked panthers on an enigmatic artefact from the ancient Middle East, if there are mysteries to be investigated, Dr Shuker is in hot pursuit. Now, compiled here for the very first time, are some of the extraordinary cases that he has re-examined or personally explored down through the years - from sky beasts and reptoids, statues that weep, bleed, and even come to life, vanishing planets and invisible saints, frog rain and angel hair, and the world's weirdest ghosts and aliens, to a chiming tower of porcelain and a talking head of brass, spooklights and foo fighters, Herne the Hunter and photographed thought-forms, the chirping pyramid of Quetzalcoatl, magical mirrii dogs Down Under, and the most comprehensive study ever published of winged cats in which he successfully unveils their long-debated cryptic identity. All of that, and much more, await you inside this arcane archive of inexplicabilia, dubitanda, and mirabilia or, as we prefer to call it, Dr Shuker's Casebook.

The Green Man Unmasked

A relic from our pagan past; a fertility symbol; the spirit of vegetation; Jack-in-the-Green, Herne the Hunter or Robin Hood-all of these descriptions and many more have been advanced to explain the identity of the strange and often outlandish image which glares so balefully from rood screen and roof boss in so many places of Christian worship throughout Western Europe. Invariably depicting a male human head, it is by any reckoning a most unusual image and while exhibiting countless variations, the predominant feature common to all is the vegetation issuing in luxuriant profusion from the mouth and coiling around the head in fantastic shapes and patterns; a feature which has no known counterpart in nature. It is the 'Green Man' so-called by generations of environmentalists and folklore enthusiasts. But such interpretations beg the question-why does the image occur predominantly within a Christian context with a frequency second only to that of Christ Himself. . Who is the 'Green Man' and what does his widespread presence signify? The author believes that the answer to this age-old riddle may be found in a number of medieval works such as the apocryphal gospels, the Bestiary and the Legend of the Rood all of which would have been familiar to scholars and teachers of the period. Although never part of the official canon, these nevertheless had a considerable influence on the teaching of the medieval Church and the imagery which it employed to illustrate it for the benefit of illiterate or semi-literate congregations. The present study represents a radical departure from the previously received wisdom on the subject and advances the hypothesis that far from being a pagan fertility symbol, the 'Green Man' is a lead player in the great scriptural drama of the Creation, the Fall of Man and his ultimate redemption.
